re black male racial victimhood

daniellemertina:

mindofthehero:

the thing is as black women  you are doubly oppressed from society for being black and from black men for being women. This is why it can be said, sadly that when it comes to the societal totem pole black women are at the bottom. A grand portion of the oppression from black men can be attributed to living in a patriarchal system; however at the same time let us not dismiss the possibility of oppression grounded in black men feeling the desire to have some form of agency and power because they are themselves brought under oppression by society. This of course does not justify various actions but it does bring things into perspective.

I feel like the bolded is always talked about in the black community & particularly black feminism. But at this point, this assertion is anti-feminism dressed up as ( already seemingly more important) anti-racism and holds no place in rigorous intellectual discussions on sexism within the black community.

I say this assertion is anti-feminist because the only reason black men feel like they’re anymore oppressed than black women (all black people lack full agency and power because we live in a white supremacist society… that’s obvious) is because of so-called “emasculation”… so basically they’re judging their oppression by the fact that unlike white men they do not have the opportunity to systematically control the women of their race (and really white men systematically control the lives of women of all races which is another sour pill for black men invested in patriarchy & anti-racism simultaneously)

There’s no point in constantly bringing this up. I feel like we need to dismiss it. Black men don’t need to rate their hardships by patriarchal standards. That does nothing for me as a black woman. And we don’t need to mention it every second like that is somehow an excuse or validation. It goes back to my OP about ‘black male racial victimhood’ … which this assertion completely plays into.
