karnythia:

Is It Right Or Okay To Talk About Whitney Houston Maybe Being Gay?

leonineantiheroine:

An article talking about Peter Tatchell’s claim that Whitney Houston was happiest with her girlfriend, Robyn Crawford. Also the writer of the article interviews bisexual activists who speculate about Whitney’s life, and uses Whitney’s death as an example to advocate for bisexual folks—problems with mental illness, etc.. I mean shouldn’t it have been Whitney’s choice to come out? Speculating about the link between Whitney’s possible mental illness and sexuality to benefit bisexual people is really inappropriate. We all know that Black women especially are perceived as mammies; it  seems that Whitney gave a lot to different people as her friend Robyn Crawford wrote in this obituary, and that this was tiring for her. Moreover Black lives don’t really matter unless we serve white people and sometimes non-Black POC. The same thing is happening here where speculation around Whitney’s sexuality is being used to agenda-push i.e. awareness about the problems facing bisexuals. It also reinforces how Black lives can only barely matter if they exist in some sort of narrative relative to whites—and in this case relative to white queers. Of course it’s important to talk about the societal problems that bisexuals face but to do it after a Black possibly bisexual woman dies—it taps into a long tradition where Black death cannot be mourned in a way that the Black person would like to be remembered. The fact is that Whitney denied being bisexual. Furthermore there was no guarantee that even if she lived openly with Robyn Crawford that her life would have been better (Tatchell insinuates that denying her attraction to and love of women caused her downfall.)
