religious post of the day

thesavagesalad:

I’m a Hindu. Not an orthodox one or a good one, but still one. I can’t speak for all Hindus nor can I speak for all religious folk.

I want to talk about some of the more orthodox Hindus I know. They know their ragas back to front and could probably set up a good puja in 10 minutes flat. They cover head to toe when they enter the temple and quite proudly identify as Brahmins.

I know this one time a friend of mine and I went to the same temple a lot of orthodox folks go. Her uncle had passed away recently and she wanted to dedicate some time to him. We were just wearing some pretty basic salwars- and like, midway through praying some random uncle interrupted us and berated us for dressing “inappropriately” in a place of worship. He told us to leave because our clothing was disrespectful and too revealing (salwar kameez tho, srsly?). We told him why we were here and about my friend’s uncle and he still wouldn’t have any of it. Not him. Not his wife. Not that mob in general.

We did step out for a bit because it was really scary having to deal with that. But then it was like- hold the fuck up. Some dick head uncle, even after telling him that we were here to pray for a friend’s dead uncle thought that he was so high and mighty with his morality that he could bully us out of there. That he was so damn close to God that he could assess our morality just by the clothes we were wearing and tell us to leave because he couldn’t deal with the fact that we looked good in our salwars and had to blame it on us.

We went back in. We heard his wife and her lot gossiping about us behind us (gossiping in a place of worship), her husband glaring at us and speaking to us in a condescending tone (in a place of worship), they had bullied us in a place of worship.

Before that altar where all the statues of all the Gods are- they did all that. All because we were wearing clothing that did not meet up to their expectations. And apparently we were the ones with low morals.

Idk- long post and all, but I’m seeing that post of that girl going around, the one who got a note from a class mate for dressing lowly in a place of high morality?

If you honestly think a person’s morality is all about what they’re wearing, and decide to treat them in such a shitty manner-

Maybe it’s you who should be revising your set of morals?
